Isla Tortuga by Adam Myers
Isla Tortuga is a beautiful tropic isle. The white-sand beach lined with coconuts is the main attraction on Isla Tortuga. The island is a very popular destination point for several excursion boats. Cruises bring passengers from various destination points to the isle.
Usually passengers take a 90-minute cruise from Puntarenas to head to Isla Tortuga. About six cruise companies send their passengers to the isle. Each cruise company has its own section of the beach. Take into consideration that on the weekend three or four cruise companies might allow their passengers to disembark at the same time, thus creating congestion.
At Isla Tortuga you can enjoy the scenery but there are also other activities. For example visitors can play volleyball, swim, snorkel, hike, or take a nap in the sun. There are pedal and oar boats, water-bicycles, kayaks, and Spyaks, which are glass bottom boats. Isla Tortuga is accessible from Montezuma as well, although most visits in the daytime originate from Playa Herradura in Jac? and Puntarenas.
Usually the tour takes you on a comfortable catamaran to the amazing Tortuga Island, which is off the southern end of the Nicoya Pen?sula. The island is a private reserve of approximately 120 hectares. The beach is perfect for swimming and it has been awarded the Bandera Azul, which is a conservation award given by the Costa Rican government.
This one-day boat tour, will take you past some of the 23 islands in the calm waters of the Gulf of Nicoya, where you can see dolphins, sea turtles and aquatic birds. Also, a wonderful gourmet lunch will be served, usually accompanied with live music.
Generally the tour driver picks you up at your hotel and drives you to Puntarenas, early in the morning. At about 9:00 a.m. you board the catamaran and head to the island. Catamarans have three levels including a sundeck and a bar. The arrival at the island is at about 10:45 a.m. At noon, a buffet style lunch is offered and visitors can choose from salads, fish, chicken, wine, fruit, dessert, etc. The cruise goes back to Puntarenas at about 3:30 p.m. arriving at about 5:15 p.m. Then, from there you can return to your start point.
Visitors should bring casual clothes, bathing suit or shorts, suntan lotion, camera, sun glasses, a tight fitting hat, rubber sandals and towel. It is wise to bring extra cash for alcoholic beverages, optional tours and souvenirs. Take into consideration that high heeled or hard soled shoes are usually not permitted on board the yacht or catamaran.
