Visible Signs Of Dry Rot
Dry rot is a condition in wood caused by a fungus. The fungi cause the weakening of timber by digesting the parts of the wood that give the timber its stiffness and strength. Usually the wood appears brittle and dry with a blocky appearance, thus the name dry rot.

Damage caused by Dry rot can be recognized through careful observation. Wood influenced by the fungi shrinks and darkens. The wood then cracks to form cuboids. This latter feature is the most distinguishable indication of the presence of a dry rot outbreak. In less damp conditions, a skin forms on the surface of the wood. The skin is silky gray in colour and could have patches of yellow and lilac. The skin can be peeled off simply as you would a mushroom.
If permitted to grow for some considerable time, the fungi may form mycelium which has the appearance of cotton wool. Growths in the shape of teardrops could also form on the mycelium. The fruiting body of the fungi is soft. It has the appearance of a pancake and is ochre or orange in colour. There are wide pores on the surface. There can also be spores that are rust red on the fruiting body. A damp odour is given off as the rotting process moves on.
