Enjoy Florida Everglades Kayaking
If you’re heading to Florida and enjoy kayaking, make sure to find the Ten thousand Islands on the southwestern tip of the state. Here you will enjoy the many wonders of the Everglades The Ten Thousand Islands area is one of the greatest secrets of the paddling world. This exotic place is located inside Everglades National Park where you will find beautiful mangrove estuaries, calm bays and unique birds and wildlife. You can also find rare trees such as the Royal Poinciana and the Plumeria
The name “Ten Thousand Islands” is actually a bit deceptive, you will find hundreds of islands in the area, but many aren’t suitable for pulling up the kayak and lying out on the beach for a break. There are a few islands, however, such as Tiger Key that have, over time, built up a sandy beach. So even though the name suggest thousands of islands, there are really only a few hundred or so, most being unusable.
This is not a kayaking trip for those who lack navigation skills. Do to the many creeks, channels, and bays in this area, it is very easy to lose your way. Caution and planing is needed. You will need at least a waterproof marine chart based on NOAA charts. You will need a good chart that is waterproof. The regular paper charts tend to fall apart when they get wet. Of course, you will want a compass to make sure you can get back on the right path if something happens. You will be in a good position if you can take a GPS tracking device so you are more likely to get back on track if you get lost. This might seem silly to some but, please be sure you know how to use these tools before heading out on a tricky paddle like this.
Chokoloskee Island is a great place to go for a day or weekend if you enjoy fishing, relaxing and Florida kayaking. When you want to enjoy some relaxation time on the island you can kick back and sink your pole into the water to catch a wide variety of fish. The island is big on relaxation and fishing, since they are blessed with redfish, tarpon, sea trout, snook, and many other types of fish. There are a plethora of paddling trails and multi-day canoe and kayak trips that can be explored and enjoyed in this area.
This are of Florida can be very relaxing and fun, but you have to realize where you are. This is a remote wilderness setting. Sunscreen and bug repellent is a must. Since all the water in the area is saltwater, all you will have access to is what you bring with you. Everyone coming on your trip will need to bring a gallon of water per day spent in the area. Make sure to bring at least a gallon of water per person for every day that you plan on spending in this area of the Everglades. All the water in the area is saltwater, so even the raccoons are dying of thirst! They will chew holes through your bottles to get to the freshwater, so make sure to protect them at all times.
Sand flies and mosquitoes also inhabit this area, after all, this is the Everglades. Take lots of insect repellent. Be sure your mosquito netting bars the tiny sand flies as well as mosquitoes. Our trip in late May was comfortable but I think we were lucky as the bugs were not in full force just yet.
If you’re brave enough to get out in the wild and smart enough to bring everything needed for a safe trip, you will fall in love with this area of the Everglades. The Ten Thousands Islands is an exciting place to visit if you have those navigational skills and come prepared for the physical exertion of Everglades kayaking.
