The original purpose of a kayak was just to allow people to paddle down the river in their own little vessel. However, today they are used for many different purposes. They are used for everything from a recreational stroll down the river to a fishing expedition to a full blown workout session. Regardless of the reason you are taking your boat to the river, there are many accessories that you should have with you. Some of these accessories are kayak anchors, kayak leashes, fishing kits and several others.
Some of the things that you have to have with you when you are taking your boat out are common items needed for basic safety. Regardless of your swimming ability, you should have a life jacket. You should also always carry a rope, a cell phone in a water proof container, a rope and a whistle. The accessories we are going to focus on are the items that are not essential, but they will make your trip much easier if you have them. A leash for your paddles is one of the first things you should get, especially if you will be traveling on a river. Even experienced kayakers tip over from time to time, because it is the nature of the boat. However, if you do not have a leash on your paddles they could be long gone before you get your bearings back to look for them. If you are on a river, they may already be so far away that you cannot get them back. Losing your paddles can even be a problem on a lake because of the currents and the waves.
A bilge pump is another item you should consider. This is something else that will help you to recover when your boat tips over. It can be difficult to get the water out of the kayak after you capsize and this device will help with that.
An anchor is another item that you should take with you, especially if you plan to explore the area or do some fishing. An anchor ensures that the boat stays in the same place if you want to get out and go for a short swim. It also helps if there is a particular spot that you want to fish in. There are now fishing kits that are specifically made for kayaks. These allow you to attach your rod to the boat in a secure position that is also out of the way. One final item that you probably need to look into if you plan to be using your boat frequently is a vehicle rack system and roof top pads. These will allow you to safely transport your kayak to and from your destination. It will also make sure that both your vehicle and your vessel are protected from being damaged.
It is important that you take the basic safety items with you when you kayak so you can have a safe and enjoyable trip. However, after the basics are covered you should consider some of the accessories we have discussed above.
