How Model Boats Can Bring Families Together by Victor Epand
Are you a boat enthusiast that is looking to spend time with your family? More importantly, spend time with your children? If you love to boat with your children, then spend time with them building model boats. When you do a project such as this, you and your children will remember the feelings of putting a model boat together for years to come.
However, it is essential that your children understands that model boats are quite sensitive and need to be handled with care, no matter which one boat you decide to go with. Most model boat parts can snap with little pressure so it is important that they handle parts gently and delicately.
Once you and your children decide to undertake a hobby like putting together boat models, it’s time to choose the kind of boat model you wish to put together with one another. What should you look for?
When you are looking at boats, remember that they are not the same as a ship. Boats are characteristically smaller. Many are not decked but some can be. Boats usually will have oars that are intended for rowing and many types have sails. Now that you know what a boat looks like, you can choose the kind of boat to work on that fits your preference and your budget.
Three Examples of Model Boats
Typhoon Boat – If you like early 20th century boats look into crafting the typhoon boat. This boat is shaped like a torpedo with two pointy ends. It also has an engine hatch that opens to reveal the miniature version of the GM engine.
1930 Mahogany Runabout – This kit comes with a double-planked hull made of birch plywood. If you purchase this kit, you get a complete set of fittings as well as a rudder, propeller, shaft, etc.
1940 Barrel Back – This boat was introduced just as the world was going into the Second World War. This boat version had a new hull shaped like a torpedo deck. It is also double planked and has birch plywood along with a mahogany veneer hull.
Types of Model Boats
When you make your purchase, decide if the boat you are building will be for decoration or for use. You can buy radio-controlled boats to put together to use for certain events such as a boating race. This can be fun to do with your children too.
If you rather have a model boat sitting on your entertainment center or bookshelf, you can buy a wooden boat that can go in a glass bottle for decorations. The best part about this is you won’t have to dust the boat as often when it is inside the glass.
If you want to spend time with your kids, let them have a say in which boat they would like to put together. By giving them some say so, the whole idea of putting a model boat will be more fun to do.
