Online Education – As Technology Expands More Students Benefit From Expanding Their Education
On campus education, while still the most common type of college education, is being supplemented more and more frequently by online classes. One in four students takes a class online in any given semester. Students are taking control of their education by enrolling in online course offerings.
Students keep flocking to online classes because of the many benefits that these classes have over regular campus classes. Students have the option of a schedule that has more leeway in it; they don’t have to be tied to a rigid schedule of lectures, so they can pursue other activities or responsibilities. Joining a discussion board for a lecture or class work can be done on a timetable that is convenient for the student, whether during the day or in the middle of the night. The cost of an online education is also a feature that draws many students; usually online classes are less expensive than a traditional class.
Now that we are in the twenty-first century, technologies for communication are increasing and being developed rapidly. Online schools, recognizing the need for newer and faster modes of communication, have quickly moved to integrate these developments as they become available. Students reap the benefit of new technology because it allows them to be more efficient, while also encouraging a level of freedom that wasn’t there before.
Since flexibility and freedom have always been very important facets for online students, new technologies that allow even more are quickly accepted and adopted. Where students always needed a PC or a laptop to access certain information for their online classrooms, they can now be even more mobile than ever. Classroom lectures can now be watched wherever a student is. The need for a wireless or Internet signal is no longer always a necessity to keep up with lecture material.
Like MP3 audio recordings, the new MP4 video compression files can be downloaded onto their smart phones or digital music players. MP4 video compression, which is also known as MPEG-4, is an offshoot of the MP3 audio recordings that are commonly downloaded through online programs like Apple’s iTunes. Students can now retrieve information that they formerly could only get through their laptop or desktop computers.
Online students can now browse through a selection of recorded lectures in the MP4 format from the digital library of their online university. Once they find the lecture or lectures they need, they can download them onto their computer and then move it onto their digital music player or their smart phone. The lectures can be loaded onto devices like the iPhone, Blackberry, or Droid. Since lectures are often up to an hour long, or in some cases longer, sharing wireless video recordings of the lecture was not a viable option. Now, however, it’s as easy as purchasing a new song online.
Distance students can now add a new moniker: mobility student. More than a billion smart phones are manufactured each year and this vast number of units creates a set of possibilities that were unthinkable even a few years ago. Across the world, the number of people who own a smart phone is far greater than the number of people who own or have access to a computer. This dynamic alone sets a scenario in which the opportunity for the education of a large number of people is possible, people who previously would never have had that type of educational access.
Colleges and universities have been hit hard by the recession of the last few years. They have seen income from grant and loan programs and foundation contributions shrivel as the economy continues to suffer. Innovations like MP4 lectures have the potential to help educational institutions offer classes to a wider pool of students without cutting back even more on other programs; some will come from online education. More and more schools are jumping on the MP4 bandwagon, with video libraries being developed in colleges in Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Indian, and California. It probably won’t be long before the technology is available from coast to coast and nation to nation, offering degrees such as Online Information Technology Degrees.
